4-4-2 Isn’t Working For Wrexham FC

I planned to write this about three weeks ago but lost my nerve. To be fair, my moment of weakness was based on hard evidence: I saw something which made me genuinely think I was wrong. Having gathered further proof, though, I’ve come to the conclusion that I was right all along. 4-4-2 doesn’t work for the current Wrexham squad and the 4-3-3 Andy Morrell … Continue reading 4-4-2 Isn’t Working For Wrexham FC

Leader Preview: Grimsby Town v Wrexham FC

Here’s my column from last week’s Leader. It forms part of the paper’s comprehensive pre-match coverage every Friday, featuring interviews, an in-depth look at the opposition and lots of statistical analysis. All content in the column (c) http://www.leaderlive.co.uk. It seems strange to go to Grimsby without Andy Morrell tomorrow, as some his most memorable moments in management came against them. Of course, his first trophy … Continue reading Leader Preview: Grimsby Town v Wrexham FC

Hereford United 0 Wrexham 2

Turns out 4-4-2 is the answer after all then! Billy Barr made bold changes to his team, switched around the formation and was rewarded with a result which was a tonic after last Tuesday. Most notably, he cracked the 4-4-2 conundrum, playing Mark Carrington high on the right. He and Johnny Hunt on the left would give a perfect illustration of the roles wide midfielders … Continue reading Hereford United 0 Wrexham 2

Wrexham 0 Barnet 1

Things fall apart. This felt the rather unpleasant yet probably inevitable consequence of the last few months. We’ve put together enough decent performances to keep the back door to the play-offs alive, but even by Andy Morrell’s admission, that route is now closed. This was the match where the incremental deteriorations in the team caught up with it. They started well for  a half hour, … Continue reading Wrexham 0 Barnet 1

Wrexham FC Mid-Season Statorama

Here’s my column from last week’s Leader. It forms part of the paper’s comprehensive pre-match coverage every Friday, featuring interviews, an in-depth look at the opposition and lots of statistical analysis. All content in the column (c) http://www.leaderlive.co.uk. The breathing space which the weather and Cambridge’s FA Trophy run has afforded us lately makes this an idea time to step back and take stock of … Continue reading Wrexham FC Mid-Season Statorama

The Strikers Dilemma

One thing Wrexham have been lacking this season is an out and out goalscorer. As it stands, Andy Bishop and Rob Ogleby are the leading scorers with seven goals each. However, four of Bishop’s goals came in two games against Gateshead and five of Ogleby’s came against Hyde. The problem is Wrexham don’t play Gateshead and Hyde every week. Adrian Cieslewicz has obviously been sold … Continue reading The Strikers Dilemma

The Quiet Promise of Kyle Parle

Here’s my column from last week’s Leader. It forms part of the paper’s comprehensive pre-match coverage every Friday, featuring interviews, an in-depth look at the opposition and lots of statistical analysis. All content in the column (c) http://www.leaderlive.co.uk. Our homegrown talent has been attracting plenty of interest lately, but it’s an unassuming young man sneaking up on the blind side who has caught my eye. … Continue reading The Quiet Promise of Kyle Parle
