Wrexham and Yeovil Town are ships that pass in the night. Their ascent to the Football League coincided with our descent to the National League. Our paths have crossed once, in the FA Cup, but they were more of an iceberg than a boat!
In November 2003, Denis Smith took his side south for a first round FA Cup match, on a run of bad form. We’d lost three in a row, the most recent coming in midweek when a rotated side had crashed to a remarkable 5-4 defeat at Stockport County in the LDV Vans Trophy. We were 4-2 up with 18 minutes left, but eventually lost out to a silver goal penalty!
Incredibly, the game at Yeovil would be even worse! Kevin Gall, who would go on to have an unsuccessful season at The Racecourse under Dean Saunders, opened the scoring, and we were 4-0 down just after the hour. Chris Armstrong got a late goal, but it was scant consolation.
