Wrexham AFC v Chesterfield: An Unhappy Affair

We beat Chesterfield 6-1 in our first meeting back in 1921, with two players scoring a hat trick, but since then things haven’t gone our way in this fixture.

Ted Regan and Bill Cotton were fighting over the match ball on that occasion, but we only won one of our next nine games against Chesterfield. The die was cast.

With 114 clashes under our belt, The Spireites are one of our most regular opponents, and they have the upper hand. They have 51 wins to our 37, and have claimed 15 victories at The Racecourse. Ore recently, we’ve only won 4 of our last 18 games against Chesterfield.

In September 1976 Billy Ashcroft hit four goals in a 6-0 win, our biggest win over Chesterfield, and he isn’t the only Wrexham striker to score four in a game in this fixture. Albert Mays got the ball rolling in a 4-3 win in 1928 and Juan Ugarte repeated the feat 77 years later as we won 4-2 at Saltergate.

Earlier this season we were denied victory by an injury time equaliser as we visited Chesterfield’s new ground for the first time. It might have been a frustrating conclusion, but at least it offered a chance to turn over a new leaf in a frustrating fixture, as we turned our back on a venue which held some unhappy memories.
