And the era begins

Just three days after the season has ended, and some surprising deals and exits have already occurred, begging the question, is there really a gap between this season coming up, and the last?
With the small matter of the World Cup in Brazil and of course Kevin Wilkin’s major overhaul, it seems that Wrexham fans will have plenty of football and news to look forward to in the close season.
And alas, just three days after the season had finished, two players have already left the club. Joe Anyinsah spent a season with the reds after his release from Bristol Rovers last summer, and the 26 year old forward has been plagued with injuries, and so has been released by Kevin Wilkin, having made 31 appearances and scoring four times in a troubled season. Also released was defender Dave Artell, the towering Gibraltan international initially joined on loan from Northampton before making a permanent move in September 2013, where he made 25 appearances scoring twice in the last campaign.
Wilkin’s Wrexham have also made moves and signed contracts for next term at least, youth product Steve Tomassen extended his stay after impressing a manager who loves to play young player (possibly a reason for the release of Artell, 32). Also signing on a short term deal was another youth product, Leon Clowes.
Many of the players have also been offered fresh deals, including goalkeeper Andy Coughlin, Johnny Hunt and young Jonathan Royle, who’s spent the majority of this season at Conference North Colwyn Bay. Another player offered a deal is Nick Rushton, he impressed in the 2012/2013 season before injury ended his campaign, a successful loan at Conference North Barrow has set him up for a place in the Wrexham first team next term.
Finally, loan defender Danny Livesey, who expressed a desire to stay at Wrexham a couple of months ago has been offered a deal on a permanent basis, as his contract with League One relegation threatened Carlisle United runs out this summer.
So the new boss hasn’t rested and at the first opportunity has let go of players and made sure he’s kept the ones he wants, over the coming days we’ll find out who else is coming or going, as talks are set to continue.

  1. I think Dave Artell signed his own death warrant a long time ago. He was right to point to the defences’ record with him in it, and I thought he put in some really solid performances. I think his mistake was negotiating too expensive a 1 year deal with Wrexham. I remember feeling a bit miffed that he hung out for a better deal from Morrell, which left Wilkin pondering can I do better than a 34 year old who won’t play every game, and wants a post-league wage?’. Wilkin answered yes to that, and I think it would have been a close call.
